Per-Item Tax Rates

Per-Item Tax Rates | Singenuity Operator Glossary

What Are Per-Item Tax Rates?

A tax configuration in which every line on an order carries its own tax treatment, rather than the whole order being taxed at a single rate. In most US jurisdictions an admission or activity, a retail T-shirt, a prepared food item, an equipment rental, and a gratuity are each taxed differently, and some are not taxable at all. Per-item tax rates let the operator assign the correct rate, exemption, or jurisdiction to each product so the tax calculated at checkout matches what is actually owed.

This becomes unavoidable the moment an operator sells anything beyond admission. A single order containing a rafting trip, a rental helmet, a sandwich, a hoodie, and a guide tip can touch four different rates plus one untaxed line, and a platform that applies one blended rate to the order will be wrong on nearly every transaction. The exposure compounds for nonprofit operators, where the same order may contain a taxable purchase and a tax-deductible donation that must be reported separately for 501(c)(3) purposes. Operators without per-item rates typically end up reconciling the difference by hand each month, or absorbing the variance and carrying the audit risk.
